Learning outcomes
The course aims to provide the notions useful for understanding the current publishing scene in the main international markets and its most significant trends. In addition, the course aims to provide the knowledge necessary to understand the characteristics of the products produced by the publishing industry and the processes and functions that make them. At the end of the course, students will have acquired awareness of the current state of publishing and its products, and will be able to intervene operatively on some aspects of editing and design.
Program
During the lessons, the current scenario of Italian publishing and the structure of the book market will be described with particular reference to the distinction between independent publishers and publishing groups.
The fundamental characteristics of some of the major Italian companies of the second half of the twentieth century will then be analyzed, starting from the figure of the "editore protagonista" up to the development of a fully industrial type of publishing and the repercussions that this produces in the author-publisher relationship and in literary communication, with special reference to the case of literary awards.
Some editorial cases will also be explored in the context of twentieth-century and contemporary Italian fiction, particularly interesting for the construction of different editorial identities.
