Learning outcomes
The aim of the course is to provide students with a deeper knowledge of some specific features of Medieval Romance literary text. At the end of the course the student will be able to analyse the texts studied during the class both under a critical and philological point of view.
Program
Marco Polo's Devisement du Monde/Million and Jean de Mandeville's Voyage d'outre mer
This course is an introduction to two fortunate texts, which offer two different ways of representing the Eastern world and which contributed to significantly shape the Western imagination on Asia between the 14th and 16th centuries. The Devisement dou monde presents, in the form of an encyclopaedic treatise, a fresco of the Orient, a synthesis of the data collected by Marco Polo during his stay at the Mongolian court. Jean de Mandeville's Voyage d'outre mer is a compilation based on written sources, which attempts to reconcile the Orient fixed by the bookish tradition with the empirical knowledge of travellers. Through a reading by selected passages, the course will present some of the themes developed in these two texts, and will illustrate the main problems related to their genesis, to their respective manuscript traditions, as well as to their construction and the way in which they represent the Other.
