Learning outcomes
The aim of the course is to train students about the 'survival' of the classic beyond the ancient world, investigating some significant aspects of the tradition and reception of Greek and Latin literature in the post-classical age.
Program
The course aims to introduce students to the History of the Classical Tradition, and will be structured in three main modules:
(i) firstly, the course will shortly focus on aspects of a conceptual and theoretical nature that are particularly relevant for the discipline (concepts of ‘Tradition’, ‘Reception Studies’, ‘Classical Reception’, etc.):
(ii) the course will then provide students with an introduction to fifth-century Attic tragedy, with particular attention to the main factes of its historical and cultural background;
(iii) classes will finally focus on the fortune of Iphigenia, a relevant figure within Classical myth and Greek literature. They will do so through an analysis of Euripides‘ plays ‘Iphigenia at Aulis’ and ‘Iphigenia among the Taurians’, and through a selection of some of the most significant episodes, mainly - but no exclusively - in the literary field, of the postclassical ‘survival’ of the Iphigenia myth up to the modern and contemporary ages.
In addition to the texts found in the ‘Bibliography’ section, further readings will be either provided in class or uploaded on the Moodle platform.
Students unable to attend classes will be required to read additional bibliography (to be indicated at the beginning of the course), and are expected to contact the lecturer during the weekly consultation times.
Course prerequisites: a basic knowledge of the classical languages is desirable, but not necessary.
Classes will be taught in praesentia as well as recorded for uploading on the Moodle platform, where they will remain available for at least a month.
