Learning outcomes

The Greek Language (p) course aims to complement the introductory course by further focusing on aspects of language and Greek dialectology, as well as by introducing Students to other literary genres than those focused on in the introductory course. The objective will be achieved by reading and analyzing a selection of highly significant literary documents.

Program

Main topics are the following:

Part 1. The legacy of archaic literary dialects in Hellenistic poetry:
– A.C. Cassio (ed.), «Storia delle lingue letterarie greche. Seconda edizione», Firenze, Le Monnier, 2016, chapters 15 ("Callimaco e la poesia alessandrina", C. Vessella), 16 ("Eronda", E. Passa), 17 ("Teocrito", C. Vessella).
– Texts: Callimachus, "Aitia" I fr. 1 and "Iambi" IX; Herodas V; Theocritus XV and XXIX.

Part 2. Literary prose in the classical and post-classical period:
– A.C. Cassio (ed.), «Storia delle lingue letterarie greche. Seconda edizione», Firenze, Le Monnier, 2016, chapter 12, § 1-2 ("La prosa", C. Vessella); chapter 13 ("La koiné", S. Kaczko).
– translation of and linguistic commentary on selected passages from prose works written in Ionic, Attic and Koine.

Additional literature references and other materials will be provided during class.

To refresh the basics, Students might refer to:
– A.C. Cassio (ed.), «Storia delle lingue letterarie greche. Seconda edizione», Firenze, Le Monnier, 2016, chapters 1, 2, 3 e 4 ("Introduzione generale", A.C. Cassio).

Particular emphasis will be placed on the morphological, phonological and stylistic aspects of the Greek texts.

Students with disabilities or specific learning disorders (SLD), who intend to request the adaptation of the exam, must follow the instructions given HERE
