Learning outcomes

Principally, knowledge of photographic technique whose foundations and principles have
remained unchanged compared to analogue photography.
Increased awareness of various lighting conditions, colour temperature and light quality,
PRE-VISUALISATION of results (know how to observe the light before filming)

Increased awareness of the creative potential of digital photography through colour
management and correction (wrongly considered interchangeable with the term postproduction) as, in contrast with analogue photography, today the photographer can take over

Program

As it is worthwhile to have a minimum amount of knowledge of "past" systems, a brief history
of analogue photography, analogue techniques, various supports and developments will be
given.
Classroom screening of documentaries and interviews with "master" photographers
Basic digital photography techniques: colour management and colour correction
Characterisation of camera, monitor, printer
Basics of digital photography colour management

- Quality of light

- Types of camera lens - angle of field and depth of field

- Colour temperature and white balance (analogue, digital)

- Fine art photography

- Importance of the LAB* system
- Pre-visualisation of the image tones displayed on the monitor using the eye dropper to read
the zones, helped by the printed grayscale that will be provided.
PRACTICAL EXERCISES
- Classroom demonstrations of various types of light sources
- Practical technique for evaluating optical quality
- White balance to be carried out during each filming situation
- Camera characterisation
- The monitor as an essential tool for photography
- Monitor calibration and profile
- The essential relationship between Resolution and Image Size in relation to output

- Colour space settings (VERY IMPORTANT) of work in Photoshop
- Setting up work areas in Photoshop and Bridge
- Camera Raw-all RAW development work will be done exclusively with CR

- Student outings to exterior locations where filming will be carried out by the students

Pre-requisites and co-requisites:
To be equipped with:
• a computer (preferably Mac), most recent PhotoshopCC with fully functional Bridge
and Camera Raw (NOT Lightroom)
• personal camera, tripod and camera shutter remote for individual exercises.

Language(s) of instruction/examination: Italian and English

Examination Methods

- Oral test of the topics covered and on the pre-visualisation of the filming conditions (e.g.:
possible questions on lighting conditions-situations, colour temperatures, mastery of the
shutter-aperture-ISO sensitivity combination etc.)
- Examination of the photographs produced with assessment exclusively based on a technical
and not conceptual/artistic level.
- Examination of freehand and tripod camera use, and the level of manual dexterity achieved
