Learning outcomes
The course aims at providing knowledge on the historical evolution of cartography and how to use the cartographic document as a source for historical-landscape analysis but also testimony of political, economic and cultural practices.
Program
To understand what is happening in the world we have always studied politics, economics, international treaties. But without geography we will never have the overall picture of events: every time world leaders make operational decisions, in fact, they have to deal with the presence of seas and rivers, mountain ranges and deserts, all elements represented in the geographical maps.
The course aims to provide knowledge on the historical evolution of cartography and on how to use the cartographic document as a source not only for historical-landscape analysis but also as a testimony of political, economic and cultural practices.
How have the geographical characteristics of a country, represented through cartography, conditioned its strength and weakness throughout history? By reading the maps, you can think about the future of our planet.
The course includes the presentation of the following topics: history "in the" geographical map; from the origins of "primitive" civilizations to the classical way, to the Middle Ages, to the modern age; thematic atlases; geographical map elements and properties; the construction of the map and its purposes; examples of the link between cartography and territory through the reading of geographical maps.
