ING-IND/16 - MANUFACTURING TECHNOLOGY AND SYSTEMS

Period

Primo semestre dal Oct 4, 2021 al Jan 28, 2022.

Learning outcomes

Aim of the Course is providing students with the main issues in Materials Science and Engineering. Basic aspects of Chemistry and Physics will be recalled, as concerns particularly their interplay with materials properties relevant to industrial applications. The main groups of materials, both traditional and advanced, are included in the program, with particular regard for metals; iron-carbon alloys, like steels, stainless steel and cast irons; other alloys; traditional and advanced ceramics; polymers. At the end of the Course, students will be able to select the best material candidates for designing and manufacturing products, using suitable processing techniques.

Program

1. Basic properties of the materials for technological applications:
classes of materials and their characterization; overall relationship between microstructure and materials properties; crystalline and amorphous structure, lattice defects, diffusion processes, thermodynamics of phase transformations and interphases.
2. Metallic materials:
General aspects of ferrous and aluminium alloys. Main processing routes.
3. Mechanical properties of materials. Elastic and plastic deformation regimes. Brittle and ductile deformation. Time dependent deformation.
4. Ceramic materials:
traditional and innovative ceramic materials; production, properties and uses; refractory ceramic materials.
5. Polymeric materials: main structural features and relevant properties of polymers; processing and use of polymeric materials.
6. Composite materials: production, properties and applications of composite materials.
7. Selection of Materials for Engineering Design: Principles.
