Learning outcomes

Knowledge and understanding 1. To know and understand the fundamental aspects of some of the most important ethical problems in the history of philosophical thought and in the contemporary world. 2. To criticize the moral principles that, during the course of history, have guided human actions, be they individual acts or choices made by an entire society. 3. Deepen in a philosophical sense the question of evil, in order to be able to face the forms of negativity such as suffering, perversion, mourning, madness, deprivation of physical and psychological freedom. Applying knowledge and understanding 1. To learn how to use an ethical language to develop reflections and arguments of a moral nature, to be integrated within one's personal and professional experience. 2. Strengthen the ability to reflect autonomously on the ethical issues that studied and relate them to the different axiological, individual and social contexts in which the educator may find himself operating.

Program

TOPICS OF THE COURSE
Title of the course: What is moral philosophy, and why it matters to us
The course will consist of two parts. The first will deal with a short but comprehensive history of moral philosophy, presenting the ethical thinking of some of the greatest philosophers (Socrates, Plato, Aristotle, medieval ethics, modern ethics, Kant, Nietzsche, contemporary ethics).
In the second part, we will analyze some of the main ethical questions discussed by philosophers through the centuries, such as good, evil, happiness, must, and justice, and some of the most daunting ethical dilemmas we are currently facing, such as genetic manipulation, end-of-life, the environmental crisis, animal ethics.

TEACHING
Students attending the classes will receive a) the basic theoretical and historical notions on the various forms in which the ethical reflection has been shaped within the context of Western civilization, and b) an analysis of the topics addressed in the second part of the course, which may feature lectures provided on specific issues by experts. Beside the texts found in the bibliography, the audio files of the lessons together with any file posted on the Moodle platform are a compulsory part of the studying material.
Meeting hours for students are scheduled during the whole academic year: days and hours may be found at the personal webpage of the teacher, and they are constantly updated. Dates and hours of the single lessons are provided before the beginning of the course; any variation will be promptly communicated in the News section of the teacher’s personal webpage, and by email via the Quickmail tool of the Moodle platform.
As for those students who will not attend classes, they can choose a more personal approach to the course (to be jointly decided with the teacher) by reading other texts in addition to the general bibliography.

Examination Methods

EXAMINATIONS
The final test will consist of an oral examination on the authors and subjects analyzed during the course.
As a consequence of the persisting emergency determined by the CoViD-19 pandemic, the modality of the final examination might change: in this case, students will be informed in advance of any modification that might occur by a post in the News section of the teacher’s personal webpage, and by email via the Quickmail tool of the Moodle platform.
