AGR/01 - AGRICULTURAL ECONOMICS AND RURAL APPRAISAL

Learning objectives
The course aims to analyse the main characteristics of the agri-food system, which represents one of the most important sectors of the economy in terms of production, employment and trade in Italy. It has the objective of encouraging understanding of decision-making and organizational processes in the context of agro-food chains and clusters. It will increase the knowledge on agro-food corporate and cooperative strategies in relation to the changes of the economic-social context and consumer expectations. At the end of the course, new skills will be acquired in knowing how to analyse the specific and most current dynamics of agri-food clusters, in particular in terms of innovation, sustainability, health, safety, tradition. Public and social purposes of agri-food clusters (for example in terms of environmental impact, nutrition and intellectual property rights) will be outlined.

Program
The course is designed to introduce the typical contents of analysis and management of agro-food districts and consists of two main parts: 1) the theoretical approach of the districts and 2) the declination of the classic districts to the agro-industrial district The topics covered in The first strand can be traced back to: - Classical approach (Porter, Marshall, etc.) of the industrial district - Becattini's contribution to the study of the industrial district - The French school of Paniers de Biens Territorialisés - The UNIDO review of the theory of districts The topics covered within the second strand can be traced back to: - The evolution of the CAP: diachronic vision - Definition of the territory as the fulcrum of analysis of the agro-industrial district - Territorial marketing and terroir marketing: the role of certifications - Intra and cross-sectoral analysis of the district from an agribusiness point of view - Best-and worst-practices An excursion at the end of the course is envisaged for transfer the concepts learned to a local agro-industrial district.
Bibliography
Didactic methods
The course is carried out through a combination of lectures and classroom discussions based on the main topics of the course. Students will be asked to prepare short presentations and participate in class discussions based on previous reading on specific topics. Short presentations can be done in small groups. The teacher is available for advice on the topics.
Learning assessment procedures
The exam is composed as follows: a group presentation which contributes to determining 40% of the vote and a final written exam with multiple choice and open questions. The latter is equivalent to 60% of the final mark.
Evaluation criteria
The group presentation serves to evaluate the ability to understand the texts offered and the oral elaboration of the same. The final written exam verifies familiarity with the main notions learned during the course and the ability to transfer them to small case studies proposed by the teacher.
Criteria for the composition of the final grade
Teamwork (40%). Final written exam (60%).
