L-FIL-LET/14 - CRITICAL COMPARATIVE LITERATURE

Period

2 A, 2 B

Learning objectives

Teaching comparative literature aims at transmitting to the students crucial conceptual intruments and modes of thoughts concerning some important literary themes current in the Western World. By the end of the course the student will master notions and critical methodologies used by the professor in class.

Prerequisites and basic notions

ATTENTION: this is an advanced course. Check the prerequisite rules on the didactic regulations of the three-year degree course in Literature, with reference to the year of enrollment

Program

Chance, luck, destiny - concepts with fleeting borders, anthropological constants and literary themes in every era and place - in the twentieth century took on new and particular nuances. After a historical-theoretical introduction, the course examines works in prose in which these themes are central, starting from the twentieth-century archetypes of Luigi Pirandello and Miguel de Unamuno, passing through Henry James, Robert Musil, Jorge Luis Borges, Dino Buzzati up to Woody Allen's cinema, radio and television fiction and the most recent forms of storytelling. The path unfolds on recurring images (the roll of the dice, the doors, the amulet, the survivor, the crystal ball ...) and typical situations such as the encounter, the game, the waiting, the divination, the retrospective glance about events.

Learning assessment procedures

Exam methods: Oral interview in Italian with open questions on the reference texts and materials on the e-learning platform, better if integrated with ideas born from classroom discussions or from culture, reflections and personal connections. For non-attending students (less than 14 lessons) the criteria will be: proactivity in recovering study materials (with some additions to critical bibliography and primary texts compared to attending students), effective reading and understanding of study materials, reworking of what has been learned, language skills. Non-attending students who need clarification on the bibliography are invited to contact the teacher. There are no variations on the program for Erasmus students who may possibly use any editions of the texts in the bibliography in English or in their own language (subject to agreement with the teacher) To arrange a reception (preferably via Zoom) write to: donatella.boni @ univr.it
