Learning objectives
The course aims to introduce the student to the knowledge of the ‘survival’ of classics beyond the ancient world. It will focus on some relevant aspects of the tradition and reception of Greek and Latin literature in postclassical times.
At the end of the course, students must be able to show:
1) that they have acquired an adequate knowledge of the concepts of ‘classical tradition’ and ‘classical reception’ in their essential features;
2) that they have acquired a thorough knowledge of the texts that have been read in the course as well as of their thematic and hermeneutic aspects;
3) that they have acquired an adequate knowledge of some of the main literary rewritings of the themes and characters of the classical literary civilization both in Greek-roman antiquity and in the modern era.
4) that they can autonomously and critically assess analogies and differences between the literary works analysed in class.
Prerequisites and basic notions
A basic knowledge of the classical languages is desirable, but not necessary.
Program
The course aims to introduce students to the History of the Classical Tradition, and will be structured in three main modules:
(i) firstly, the course will shortly focus on aspects of a conceptual and theoretical nature that are particularly relevant for the discipline (concepts of ‘Tradition’, ‘Reception Studies’, ‘Classical Reception’, etc.);
(ii) the course will then provide students with an introduction to fifth-century Attic tragedy, with particular focus on the main factes of its historical and cultural background;
(iii) classes will finally focus on the fortune of Medea, a relevant figure within Classical myth and Classical literatures. They will do so through an analysis of Euripides‘ play ‘Medea’ and, subsequently, by examining a selection of the most significant episodes, mainly - but no exclusively - in the literary field, of the postclassical ‘survival’ of the Medea myth up to the modern and contemporary ages.
In addition to the texts found in the ‘Bibliography’ section, further readings will be either provided in class or uploaded on the Moodle platform.
Students unable to attend classes will be required to read additional bibliography (to be indicated at the beginning of the course), and are expected to contact the lecturer during the weekly consultation times.

Didactic methods
Frontal teaching.
Learning assessment procedures
The examination will be conducted orally. It will aim to ascertain the students’ knowledge both on the course contents and on the reference texts, also in accordance with the indications given throughout the course. Exam questions will range from the theoretical contents of the course to the literary texts specifically dealing with the figure of Medea and the main thematic and hermeneutical implications thereof.
Evaluation criteria
The examination will place particular emphasis on the following aspects:
- the students’ knowledge of the course contents;
- their ability to provide clear and in-depth answers to the exam questions;
- their ability to use appropriate and precise language.
