Places of care for the sick in the ancient world.
Hospitality in the early Christian and medieval periods. Healing and caring for the person.
The transformation of the hospital from the fifteenth to the seventeenth century.
Hospital reforms from the Enlightenment to the early nineteenth century.
Nineteenth and twentieth centuries: pavilion hospitals and monoblock hospitals.
Scenarios and perspectives in the current hospital organization.
Notes on the history of hospitals in Verona.

Introduction to the Course.
The history of hospital care in the history of medicine and society: perspectives and study paths. Bibliographic references and web resources.
Places of care for the sick in the ancient world.
Asclepieia and Valetudinaria in the Greek world and Roman civilization.
Hospitality in the early Christian and medieval periods. Healing.
Xenodochia, Claustrum infirmorum, Hospitium. The etymology of a name centered on hospitality. Characteristics and transformations of hospital care between the Early and Late Middle Ages. Healing and caring for the person.
The transformation of the hospital from the fifteenth to the seventeenth century. The “Spedal Grande” and the great hospitals.
Hospital reforms from the Enlightenment to the early nineteenth century.
Nineteenth and twentieth centuries: The first European code of medical ethics from the Manchester Infirmary. Pavilion hospitals and monoblock hospitals.
Scenarios and perspectives in current hospital organization.
Notes on the history of hospitals in Verona (Xenodochia, Saints James and Lazarus at the Tomb, Domus Pietatis, Holy House of Mercy, Civic Hospital of St. Anthony, Alessandri Children's Hospital, Borgo Trento, and Borgo Roma).
