Specifically, the course will explore the following topics:
- The characteristics of academic English in the medical-scientific field at the lexical, syntactic and pragmatic levels
- Lexicon: the human body; diseases, causes, symptoms, and cures; the medical profession and the hospital environment; the most commonly used acronyms; the main mechanisms of word formation
- Grammar: forms and use of verb tenses; active and passive modes; modal, semi-modal, prepositional and phrasal verbs; conditionals and hedging forms; reported speech; textual cohesion and coherence
