Learning objectives

The course is designed to provide students with a comprehensive training on both structure and role of microbial communities within different natural and anthropized habitats, as main actors of biogeochemical cycles of the elements. Students will have the opportunity to learn the most up-to-date theoretical principles and experimental methodologies to analyze microbial communities both in natural systems and in engineered (technological) contexts. Students attending the course will also be able to acquire interpretative tools allowing them to identify the occurrence of ecological imbalances and critically evaluate human impacts on the environment in terms of pollution and climate change, possibly even due to perturbations of microbial biocenoses at macro-scale level.

Prerequisites and basic notions

Basic knowledge of the biology of microorganisms: microbial metabolism (e.g. fermentation, respiration, etc.), organization and components of the microbial cell, both in eukaryotic and prokaryotic organisms, environmental parameters that impact their growth (oxygen, pH, temperature)

6. Analysis of communities using culture-dependent methods
7. Phylogeny and microbial systematics
8. Analysis of microbial communities with culture-independent microscopy methods
9. Analysis of communities using culture-independent methods
10. Measurement of microbial activities in natural habitats
11. Adaptation mechanisms 12 Applicability of microbial bioresources

Didactic methods

The lessons will be held in Italian in person; the teaching material will be available in Italian. Teaching will be carried out without resorting to emergency online teaching methods. It will not be provided in other ways except limited to students who cannot access the University due to Covid.

Learning assessment procedures

Oral examination

Students with disabilities or specific learning disorders (SLD), who intend to request the adaptation of the exam, must follow the instructions given HERE

Evaluation criteria

Oral assessment (usually 3 questions) of understanding of the contents and ability to connect topics to each other.

Criteria for the composition of the final grade

The final grade will be expressed mainly on the oral evaluation. A total of 2 points will be awarded based on the presentation that students will make during the course on some scientific articles that deal with topics related to the course
