How to enroll

To be admitted to the Ph.D. Programme, applicants must participate in an open competition based on qualifications and examinations. The selection procedure aims to ascertain the applicants’ academic background and scientific research aptitude to ensure an appropriate comparative assessment. The Call for Applications sets out details about examination and assessment criteria.

Admission Requirements and Application procedures

Applications may be submitted, without age or nationality restrictions, by candidates who:

have studied in Italy and hold a qualification such as laurea magistrale, laurea specialistica or laurea del vecchio ordinamento (pre D.M. 509/1999)
hold a university degree equivalent to the degrees mentioned above (Master of Science/Art), which grants access to the doctorate in the country where they completed their university studies.

Professional qualifications (e.g., Master of Business Administration - MBA, Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery - MBBS, etc.) do not grant access to PhD studies.

Those who will graduate by the date of enrolment in the Ph.D. program may also apply and participate in the competition.

To submit an application the candidate must connect to the ESSE3 website www.univr.it/ammissionedottorati in the dates indicated by the Call for Admissions, select the PhD Programme of interest, complete the online application which must subsequently be sent, together with the requested documentation, to phd.selection@ateneo.univr.it no later than the date and time indicated in the Call.

The operational instructions for submitting the online application are available in specific "Guidelines" available in the section dedicated to the competition procedure and published at the same time as the Call for Admissions.
There is no fee to participate in the competition.

Enrollment to the PhD

At the end of the selection procedures, the winner candidates must enroll in the PhD Programme by the deadline indicated in the Rectoral Decree following the instructions in the "Guidelines" published at the same time as the Decree. Upon registration, payment of an annual fee is required, to be paid in a single installment at the time of registration and consisting of the following items:

PhD students with and without scholarship: €208.00 (of which €192.00 as regional tax on the right to study, €16.00 for stamp duty paid virtually)

Non-EU citizens will be assisted by the PhD Unit in applying for a study visa. Please note that pre-enrolment at the university does not guarantee an appointment at the visa offices for the submission of visa applications. As indicated in the ministerial notice ’Procedures for the entry, stay, enrolment of international students and the related recognition of qualifications for higher education courses in Italy valid for the academic year 2025-2026’ (page 7), the prior acceptance of a candidate by the university does not confer any right to obtain a visa, given that the issuance of study visas is the exclusive responsibility of the diplomatic-consular representatives.

Applicants can submit their application from 11 May 2026 to 9 June 2026 at 12.00 noon (Italian time, GMT+1).

The applicants have to:

go to www.univr.it/applicationphd webpage
if you are a new user, register to the online system by entering the information required
if you are a student or a former student of this University or a user already registered, log in using your personal credentials
select the chosen PhD programme in the menu option "Registrar's Office - Admission test - Admission test"
proceed with the compilation by entering all the required data including the qualifications being evaluated which must be uploaded in PDF format specifying for each a nomenclature which clarifies its content
once you have completed the form, pay the competition participation fee using the automatically generated Pago PA payment slip

To be admitted to the selection process, a mandatory, non-refundable fee of €10.00 (ten/00) is required, under penalty of exclusion. This fee must be paid by the application deadline. The application fee is due for each application submitted (up to a maximum of three).
