La historia léxica del español de América a través de sus textos Teniendo en cuenta el carácter eminentemente práctico de este seminario, se pretende con él facilitar al estudiante una serie de contenidos teóricos que le permitan llevar a cabo estudios relacionados con la historia léxica del español de América, y más concretamente con los procesos de americanización que a la larga conllevan la creación - por medio del empleo de voces diatópicamente restringidas - de la fuerte personalidad que actualmente muestran estas hablas. Con este propósito, se describirán de manera detallada las diversas estrategias que se emplean en la americanización y el fundamental concepto de configuración léxica, para discutir después las diversas interpretaciones que se han dado en la bibliografía al americanismo. Una vez incorporado este bagaje metodológico, se procederá a analizar diversos textos, de manera que se discutan de forma práctica las ventajas y los problemas que encierra una propuesta de trabajo como la presente. |

Lexical Variation and Change. A Distributional Semantic Approach The seminar starts with an introduction to the study of lexical variation and change within the theoretical framework of Cognitive Sociolinguistics. This framework combines sociolinguistics’ interest in the variational aspects of language with the usage-based conception of meaning developed within cognitive linguistics. Like in cognitive semantics, word meanings are analysed as prototypically structured categories, displaying salience and fuzziness effects both on the intensional (semantic) and extensional (referential) level. These are then seen as interacting with extralinguistic (a.k.a. lectal) factors, like social groups, situation or time, resulting in lexical variation and change. Different types of variation can be studied from both a semasiological and an onomasiological perspective, and both in individual case studies (specific words or concepts) or on the aggregate level (lexical distances between language varieties). The second part of seminar will introduce the corpus-driven methodology developed by the QLVL research group at KU Leuven that combines distributional semantic modelling with statistical analysis and data visualization to study lexical variation and change. In this approach, the meaning of words is modelled statistically based on their contextual usage and is represented as vectors (a.k.a. word embeddings), both on the type level (static embeddings) and token level (contextualized embeddings). By obtaining word vectors from stratified corpora, i.e. representing different language varieties, applying cluster analysis and visualizing the vectors and clusters, the approach allows to uncover patterns of lexical variation between e.g. regiolects, registers or time periods. The seminar will include a hands-on session focussing on a case study of near-synonyms from the domain of immigration discourse that have undergone recent semantic change. The seminar concludes with pointers to resources for PhD students interested in applying the approach in their own research. |

Approssimazioni teorico-metodologiche all’analisi della scrittura documentale Il seminario si prefigge di discutere le implicazioni teoriche del cosiddetto “giro documentale” che la letteratura, a livello internazionale, ha vissuto a partire dell’ultimo decennio del XX secolo. A partire da una discussione teorico-metodologica generale, ci concentreremo in particolar modo sulla poesia, in cui l’uso del documento appare maggiormente “scioccante”, proprio per la sua natura profondamente intimista e non-mimetica. |
