Learning objectives
The course will provide the basic knowledge and skills necessary for the autonomous study of the illuminated manuscript. More specifically, the course will address diachronically the main issues and research topics related to manuscript illumination (e.g. materials and techniques, production centres and artists, functions of the illuminated book, book types and illustration systems, relationship between text and image).
Prerequisites and basic notions
Basic knowledge of medieval and modern art history
Program
The course is organized in two parts: an introductory part on the history of the miniature and a monographic part dedicated to a specific topic. Firstly, the introductory part will illustrate the evolution of the illuminated manuscript between the Middle Ages and the Renaissance from a material, stylistic and iconographic point of view. Secondly, it will show how the different typologies of illustrative scheme relate to the specific function of each illuminated manuscript. Thirdly, the introductory part will approach some research topics regarding the rise of historical study of illuminated manuscripts and the taste and collecting of illuminations in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.
For A.Y. 2024-2025 the monographic part will be devoted to considering some aspects of the Carolingian illuminated manuscripts and their relationship to the ancient world.

Didactic methods
The course includes 18 hours of lectures (3 cfu) for the introductory part and 18 hours of lectures (3 cfu) for the monographic part that will take place in the classroom with the support of projections. For each part at least one educational visit to a library in relation to the course topic will be provided.
Power points will be presented during the lections in order to provide a good repertoire of images and to deal with the study of the texts in the program useful for both attending and nonattending students.
During the academic year, individual reception by the lecturers is available to be scheduled by e-mail.
There is no program distinction between attending and non-attending students, but it is advisable for the latter to make contact with the lecturer before taking the exam.
