Learning objectives
Develop practical skills in the management of contemporary artistic heritage, including the design of communication and valorization strategies. Examine the history and evolution of hip-hop culture, urban graffiti and street art in the territorial context of Verona, and compare it with national and international contexts. Deepen the conservation techniques of detached graffiti and the socio-cultural implications of their restoration and exhibition.
Prerequisites and basic notions
Candidates must have attended the introductory course in Contemporary Art History and must demonstrate familiarity and interest in the concepts of museology, curation and management of cultural heritage.
Program
The collection of the Cariverona Foundation is made available to a selected group of students as material for field experience, transforming itself into an empirical training device on which the work groups can experiment with strategies of study, curation, installation, communication and narration to the public, considering art as an object and subject of research, a living body in relation to the territory, a vehicle for the creation of communities. The workshop is intended for students who are studying cultural heritage, art, criticism, museology, museography, cultural mediation, graphics and communication for culture and similar; in particular, it is intended for students of the three-year degree courses in Cultural Heritage, the Interuniversity Master's Degree in Art and the Master's Degree in History of Arts of the University of Verona, students of the Academy of Fine Arts of Verona and IUSVE students. The workshop, which focuses on the study, management and valorization of a collection as a tool for relating to the territory and the city, combines classroom meetings with permanent tutors and guests chosen from among professionals in the sector (museum curators and independent curators, critics, press officers, visual & digital designers, etc.) with laboratory sessions in which students are guided in the construction of curatorial projects, from the selection of works and their contextual study and cataloguing, to the writing of a curatorial text on the exhibition project as a whole, from the creation of an exhibition project to the drafting of a press release, from the creation of a communication campaign (from the editorial plan, to the graphics, to the communication strategies on social media), to the creation of a digital publication, learning at the same time to work in a team and to build complex projects. The third edition of Visual Art Collection Management and Curating focuses on the history of street art and urban graffiti in Verona, with a particular focus on the period between 1984 and 2014, and the specific case of the Ex Magazzini Generali highlighted in the publication "Verona Writers. Aerosol Art scaligera dal 1984 al 2014". The main objective is to explore the complex intersection between urban art, hip-hop culture and the management of detached artistic heritage with particular reference to the collection of Fondazione Cariverona. Key themes: Veronese Context and the Magazzini Generali An investigation of the hip-hop subculture and its growth, with a specific focus on the Magazzini Generali as a privileged place for artistic expression. National and International Context A comparative analysis with other national and international realities, exploring the mutual influences between the communities of artists. History of Urban Art A reflection on the evolution of street art and urban graffiti in the Italian context, with a distinction between the different forms of artistic expression. Gli Strappi Socio-Cultural Rationales and Technical Aspects: Insights into the cultural and social motivations behind the 2014 detachment campaign, along with a discussion of the technical aspects involved. National and International Case Studies A detailed study of similar experiences in other Italian and international cities, exploring the reactions of the communities and institutions involved. Valorization Tools and Opportunities Exploration of strategies to valorize detached artistic heritage, including possible exhibition projects and collaborations with cultural institutions. Management of Strapped Heritage An analysis of the processes of conservation and presentation of detached graffiti, involving experts in the management of public art collections.
