Learning outcomes

The course aims at providing the students with the basic methodological tools that are required to understand and analyze the theatrical performance and its specific forms, functions, and meanings in different historical, social, and cultural contexts. At the end of the course students will be asked to recognize the mutual relationship between the elements of a performance (text, space, acting, scenography, costume, light, music) and the different importance that each of them have according to the specific periods of theatre history on which the programme will focus.

Program

Forms and contexts of theatrical performance. The course is aimed at offering to the students the basic tools for the historical and critical analysis of the theatrical performance and of its connection with the different social and cultural context in which it originates and develops. The analysis will be focused in particular on Greek tragedy, Italian Renaissance comedy, Elizabethan tragedy, eighteenth century French theatre, contemporary experimental theatre.
