Learning outcomes

The course aims at providing the students with the basic methodological tools that are required to understand and analyze the theatrical performance and its specific forms, functions, and meanings in different historical, social, and cultural contexts.

Program

Forms and contexts of theatrical performance. The course is aimed at offering to the students the basic tools for the historical and critical analysis of the theatrical performance and of its connection with the different social and cultural context in which it originates and develops. The analysis will be focused in particular on Greek tragedy, Italian Renaissance comedy, eighteenth century French and Italian theatre, contemporary theatre. A space will also be devoted to two "marginal" forms of entertainment, the circus and puppetry.

Examination Methods

Oral examination.
The exam will verify the students' historical knowledge of the theatrical forms examined during the course and on the texts, and will check their skills to recognize and analyse the relationship between theatrical forms and their socio-cultural context.
