Learning outcomes

The course aims at exploring, from a theoretical and empirical perspective, several linguistic phenomena lay at the interface between morphology/lexicon and syntax.

Program

Prerequisites: Attendance of the course “Introduzione allo studio del linguaggio”.

Syllabus: "The lexicon/syntax interface"

The course aims at introducing the students to a class of phenomena that lay at the interface between lexicon/morphology and syntax. In particular, it will be focused on word formation phenomena such as compounding, nominal derivation and reduplication/doubling. The study of these phenomena, based on the data from typologically and historically unrelated languages, will shed light on the complex relation between lexicon and syntax and will pave the way to the illustration of recent theories on the architecture of language.
As a result of the course, students will get acquainted with several linguistic problems and theories, often neglected in the introductory courses, conveniently illustrated with challenging data from theoretical and experimental literature.
