L-OR/01 - HISTORY OF ANCIENT NEAR EAST
Period

Learning outcomes
The knowledge of the Akkadian (Assyro-Babylonian) language allows to deepen the knowledge of the Near Eastern world and is part of the study of ancient history envisaged in the didactic paths of the courses in Literature and Cultural Heritage. The course aims to provide the student with the basic tools for directly interpreting the sources of Mesopotamian history and culture. It also gives the opportunity to learn the basic rules of the most ancient Semitic language and observe the links with more recent and modern Semitic languages.
The organization of the course as a seminar provides the students with a guided and stimulating approach to the ancient texts.
Program
The course proposes the basic rules of Akkadian phonetics and morphology and some simple syntactic rules. It also focusses on the cuneiform writing system and on the methods and conventions of signs transcriptions. The seminal organization of the course entails the presentation of the grammatical rules and guided exercises on texts progressively more complex although elementary. Due to the seminal character of the course, the students must attend at least 2/3 of the lessons.
