Learning outcomes
The advanced course of Medieval History will examine a particular historical topic and its different manifestations over time, by means of the critical analysis of historical sources and in relation to the broader context of medieval society, allowing students to evaluate continuities and discontinuities of long-term phenomena, even in comparison to the contemporary age.
Program
The advance course aims to investigate the techniques and types of urban manufacturing in the late Middle Ages, together with the infrastructures, activities and commercial networks for the supply of handcrafted items at both regional and international level, with particular attention to the cities of Central-Northern Italy, framed within the broader context of Western civilization. The following topics will be explored in a diachronic way:
- Climate, environment and demography in the late Middle Ages
- Geography of raw materials and energy resources
- Manufacturing technology and proto-industrial production
- Craftsmen classes, guilds and workshops
- The economic policies of urban communes, lordships and regional states
- Communication routes and commercial infrastructures
- Local and international exchange networks
- Merchants, commercial enterprises and mercantile practices
- Accounting techniques, financial instruments and commercial records
During the course, different historical sources will be shared, analyzed and discussed with the students. The same sources will be part of the examination program for attending students.
Students can use one of the handbooks recommended for the introductory course for general information. In addition, attending and non-attending students are required to study another handbooks, to be freely chosen between these two options:

Examination Methods
The assessment consists of an oral exam and will focus on at least three different topics. During the exam will be evaluated the basic knowledge together with the ability to contextualize historical facts, as well as the ability to analyze and discuss the historical sources examined during the course. The quality of the oral presentation will also be taken into account, in terms of clarity, communicative effectiveness and proficient use of the discipline specific vocabulary.
Attending and non-attending students will be assessed in the same way. Attending students will prepare themselves on the course handbook (to be freely chosen between two options suggested by the teacher) together with the course lecture notes and sources uploaded to the Moodle page of the course itself. Non-attending students will prepare themselves on the course handbook together with five further readings (to be freely chosen among eleven options suggested by the teacher).
