Learning objectives
History of Philosophy in the Renaissance
The course aims to provide students with a knowledge of the main philosophical, political and artistic texts of the Renaissance (15th-16th century), seen in the wider context of Western philosophical tradition. At the end of the course, students shall be able to demonstrate their ability to contextualize from both a historical and critical viewpoint the authors and the topics discussed during the course. They will also develop their capacity to communicate philosophical contents to specialists and non-specialists alike, and their capacity to continue their studies at a MA level.
Prerequisites and basic notions
There are no formal restrictions on enrolling in the course.
Program
The teacher will present some historiographical theories of the Renaissance that took place in Italy between the Risorgimento and the second postwar period. Particular emphasis will be placed on the interpretation of Eugenio Garin, placing it in relation to those of Bertrando Spaventa, Antonio Labriola, Benedetto Croce and Antonio Gramsci. In light of the preliminary presentation of the results of Italian historiography of the twentieth century, the teacher will comment on the oration on The dignity of man by Giovanni Pico della Mirandola.
Bibliography
Didactic methods
The course will be held in compliance with the University provisions on COVID-19. The course will be divided into lectures that will be alternated with discussions led by the teacher and short reports by the students (optional) on previously agreed topics. Particular attention will be given to reading and commenting on the text. The plurality of didactic paths is designed according to the student, who will be provided with as broad a spectrum as possible of learning opportunities in order to guarantee the acquisition of both the knowledge and the skills set out in the training objectives.
Learning assessment procedures
Oral exam (in person or remotely depending on the University provisions on COVID-19)
Evaluation criteria
The evaluation criteria will be as follows: 1) possession of key information and notions; 2) ability to explain clearly and with language properties; 3) ability to analyze texts; 4) autonomy of thought.
Criteria for the composition of the final grade
The final grade will be expressed out of thirty.
