The course intends to introduce to a classic of Modern Philosophy with the aim of highlighting the theoretical issues which concern both the philosophy of knowledge and the metaphysics. The purpose of the course is not only to provide students with conceptual grounds and critical methodology, but also to develop their hermeneutical abilities in order to make them able to understand the text, its fundamental assumptions, and its problematical implications, so that they could note both its logical structure and the potential contradictions. Together with conceptual clarity, the course pays special attention to the acquisition of the terminological precision, which is necessary to fully express the critical and speculative abilities.

Prerequisite: in order to attend the Theoretical Philosophy A (i) course, we recommend the attendance of the History of Philosophy A (i) (12) course, which will be held in the first semester. Course content: The problem of metaphysics in the face of Kant's criticism in transcendental Dialectics. What is the value of metaphysics as a natural tendency to go beyond the plan of phenomena? What is the value of self-knowledge (rational psychology)? What opportunities for a speech that comes to affirm the Necessary Being? What are the difficulties of the a priori argument? What is the possible comparison between Kant's and those of Thomas Aquinas? These are the fundamental issues that will be addressed in the form. Reference Texts: 1) I. Kant, Critica della ragion pura, Laterza, Bari 2014. 2) G. Zamboni, Studi sulla «Critica della ragione pura», introd. e cura di F.L. Marcolungo, QuiEdit, Verona 2017. Any indication will be provided to the students during the course and will be online available on the e-learning section of the univr website, where we will also indicate further texts and teaching materials. The contents of the First Module of the course follow the internal division of Kant’s Critique of Pure Reason, which is the subject of both the course and the examination: 1) General introduction (bio-bibliographical) to Kant and, specifically, to the Critique of Pure Reason; 2) Preface to the first and second edition of the Critique and Introduction; 3) Transcendental aesthetics; 4) Transcendental logic: analytic of concepts and analytic of principles; 5) The transcendental doctrine of method. Reference texts The texts required are as follows: 1) Immanuel Kant, Critica della ragion pura, tr. it. di G. Gentile e G. Lombardo Radice, Laterza, Roma-Bari 2005. This text will be used for both the First Module (prof. Poggi) of the course (transcendental aesthetics; transcendental logic: analytic of concepts and analytic of principles; transcendental doctrine of method) and for the Second Module (prof. Marcolungo) of the course (transcendental dialectic and appendix); 2) Giuseppe Zamboni, Studi sulla «Critica della ragione pura», QuiEdit, Verona 2017. The reference texts are the same for both attending students and those who can not attend lectures. For attending students and not attending ones interested in further detailed study, the following optional texts are also recommended: 1) Sofia Vanni Rovighi, Introduzione allo studio di Kant, La Scuola, Brescia 1997 (or any other reprint); 2) Otfried Höffe, Immanuel Kant, trad. it. di Sonia Carboncini, Il Mulino, Bologna 2010 (or any other edition); 3) Silvestro Marcucci, Guida alla «Critica della ragion pura» di Kant, Laterza, Bari-Roma 2011; 4) Raffaele Ciafardone, La critica della ragion pura di Kant. Didactic Methods The teaching methods consist of traditional lectures axed on the reading and the comment on the text of the Transcendental Dialectic, with the aim of transmitting: 1) the key concepts of theoretical philosophy in general (with regard to the philosophy of knowledge and the metaphysics); 2) the key concepts of both Kantian philosophy and its exegesis; 3) the critical means that are useful for understanding (and for dealing with) the problematic issues involved in Kant’s thought. By means of power point presentations, the general introduction (bio-bibliographical) to Kant and his philosophy will be more clear and immediate, especially for the students who approach philosophy for the first time. Each lesson will be recorded in WMA format and, together with all the material analysed during the course, will be punctually loaded on the e-learning platform of the University with the aim of easing the study for both attending students and those who can not attend lectures. During the academic year, an individual consultation service is also available at the teacher's study, at the times indicated on the web pages and readily updated. Examination arrangements The assessment of the learning outcomes of both the key concepts and the issues which concern the Transcendental Dialectic, as well as the interpretation offered by Giuseppe Zamboni, will be done by means of an oral examination concerning the program carried out during the course. This examination consists of questions to test the critical and argumentative abilities of the students, the textual exegesis, the conceptual clarity, and the acquisition of an adequate philosophical vocabulary. The grades are expressed in thirtieths. The examination is the same for both attending students and non-attending ones.

Examination arrangements The assessment of the learning outcomes of both the key concepts and the issues which concern the Critique of Pure Reason will be done by means of an oral examination concerning the programme carried out during the course. This examination consists of questions to test the critical and argumentative abilities of the students, the textual exegesis, the conceptual clarity, and the acquisition of an adequate philosophical vocabulary.
