Learning outcomes

The aim of this introductory course is to provide students with the basic tools for analyzing the structure of the German sentence

Program

The introduction will be devoted to the idea of Grammar as a formal system as well as to the importance of cross-linguistic variation.
Then the hallmarks of the German sentence will be described with particular reference to notions such as “constituent”, “phrase”, “syntactic function”, “Verb Second”, “OV word order”. The different sentence types will be analyzed within the so-called Felderanalyse, a firmly established analytical/didactic framework.
