Learning objectives

This class aims at developing and consolidating students’ competence in the phonological and morphological aspects of contemporary English, also paying attention to their evolution over time. Students should also acquire a linguistic competence in English at a B2 level according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.

Learning assessment procedures

WRITTEN EXAM comprising 30 items covering phonetic and morphological aspects of the English language, as well as the basics of the origin and development of English.

Below are the main topics covered in the exam:

- phonetic transcription of a set of words/phrases;
- articulatory description (voicing, place of articulation, manner of articulation) of phonetic symbols;
- assimilation, t-voicing, dark l, clipped syllables, silent letters;
- stressed/unstressed syllables, content words, nucleus placement;
- British English vs American English spelling and pronunciation;
- inflectional morphology;
- derivational morphology;
- prefixes and suffixes;
- compounds, blends and acronyms;
- origins and development of English: the basics.

note for non-attendant students: non-attendant students are required to study in depth the texts indicated on the Moodle page

Criteria for the composition of the final grade

The final grade of the exam will be the average of the grade of the written exam and the grade obtained in the CLA computer test. The latter will be converted into /30 according to the CLA conversion table. Students who have obtained external language certificates should obtain and equivalence certificate from the CLA before the date of the exam.
