Type D and Type F Credits (CFUs D and F)

As part of the academic plans for each degree program, students must earn a specified number of credits from the Type D and F (CFUs D and F) categories.  

CFUs D (student's choice activities)  

CFUs D can be earned through various activities, including:

  • Elective courses: non-mandatory courses within your plan of study, subject to the approval of the Chair of the Teaching Committee the course cannot be selected independently.
  • Accredited activities: activities accredited by the Teaching Committee
  • Language Proficiency: acquiring proficiency in languages different from or additional to the required ones.
  • Internships or apprenticeships: practical work experience in relevant fields  
  • TALCs (Transversal Skills): skills gained through specific university programs.

The total number of CFUs D is calculated over the entire degree period (two or three years) and is not tied to a single academic year.

Contamination Lab  

The Contamination Lab Verona (CLab Verona) is an experiential learning program focused on innovation and business culture. It offers students the opportunity to collaborate in teams across different programmes and disciplines to solve challenges posed private companies and institutions. Completing this pathway earns students 6 CFUs D. Learn more about the CLab challenges here.  

  Important Notes:  

  • To be eligible for any credit-bearing learning activities, including electives, students must be enrolled in the academic year during which the activities are offered.  
  • GRADUATING SENIORS: Students who plan to graduate in the November or March/April sessions are advised NOT to undertake extracurricular activities in a new academic year (in which they are not enrolled), as these graduation sessions correspond to the previous academic year. Activities completed during an academic year in which students is not enrolled will not be credited with CFUs.  

CFUs F (other training activities)  

CFUs F typically relate to skills in computing and languages, internships and apprenticeships, and other educational activities accredited by the Teaching Committee.  

The degree program in Languages and Cultures for Tourism and International Commerce recognizes the following:  

  • 3 CFUs for a third language (B1 level)  
  • 3 CFUs for computer skills  
  • 6 CFUs for a mandatory internship.  

Computer skills can be acquired by:  

  • Passing the test in the University's computer labs.  
  • Attending and passing the final exams for courses offered by schools and centres accredited by AICA (Italian Association for Computer Science and Automatic Computing) or courses recognized by the Province and Region. Applications for the recognition of previously acquired computer skills are reviewed by the Commission for the Recognition of Computer Skills.  

Internship are designed to provide students with direct, practical knowledge and experience relevant to their field of study, helping them acquire specific professional skills.

Learning objectives

The course aims to develop and consolidate their understanding of the pragmatic and multimodal aspects of the promotional text in English, with special focus on the varieties of tourism and commerce. At the end of the course the students should be able to demonstrate a competent use of the tools for analysis of the descriptive and persuasive texts in English. A C1 competence is required for the exam.

Prerequisites and basic notions

Prerequisites: English Language 2, complete C1 level of English Language proficiency (or certificate of equivalence issued by CLA, the Language Center of the University), English Literature 2 (or equivalent exam). As stated in the "Regulatory Handbook for Students in the Foreign Languages and Literatures Area", the validity of the C1 language certification obtained from October 1, 2024, is three years from the date of attainment.

Learning Outcomes: By the end of the course, students will have developed an understanding of the key concepts and theories of pragmatics and how they apply to English for tourism and commerce. They will have acquired an understanding of the impact of intercultural relations on speech acts and politeness cultures. Finally, they will be able to identify the pragmatic aspects of the use of English in touristic and commercial promotions, including the multimodal aspects of such promotions.

Didactic methods

Face-to-face classroom lectures. Activities and exercises will be proposed during the course. Attending students are invited to complete the activities and discuss them in the classroom. Activities will not be available after the end of the course. The course slides posted on Moodle will be available until the end of January 2026.
The language of the course is English.
Methods of teaching support:
Slides are available on Moodle; the bibliography is available on this website. Students are also encouraged to contact the professor by e-mail and during office hours (also via Zoom, Meeting ID: 899 7426 1272)
Non-attendant students are expected to study the syllabus topics, reference the books listed in the bibliography of the course, and do the exercises found at the end of each chapter of the book Pragmatics, and check the answers at the end of the book.

Learning assessment procedures

The exam is a written test in English on the topics of the lessons and activities related to the course. It consists of closed-ended and semi-closed questions. The test lasts forty minutes.

Students with disabilities or specific learning disorders (SLD), who intend to request the adaptation of the exam, must follow the instructions given HERE

Evaluation criteria

The evaluation of the final exam is based on the score obtained on the test. The final score is the average between the score of the language proficiency certificate and the score of the exam. Active participation in the activities proposed during the course is essential for adequate preparation for the final exam. Non-attendees are encouraged to carry out further exercises proposed in the textbooks of the bibliography.

Criteria for the composition of the final grade

The final grade is the arithmetic average between the outcome of the exam (out of thirty) and the English language C1 level certification (or its equivalent) obtained at the CLA (out of thirty according to the current table)
