Learning objectives

The course aims to provide the tools to interpret the evolution, meaning and function of fashion, as represented in the figurative arts. At the end of the course, the student must be able to recognize the chronological and geographic scope, the main elements of clothing and the related terminology, the social and eventually symbolic value assigned to clothes and accessories; the student must demonstrate the ability to use the main written and iconographic sources on the topic as an aid to the mentioned reading process.

Prerequisites and basic notions

No prerequisites are required

Program

The course aims to provide the fundamental tools to know and memorize the main phases of the history of fashion from the Renaissance to the twentieth century. The course will describe types and models according to their chronology and geographic origin. Fashion will also be interpreted as a response to the cultural values of different periods and countries, with particular attention to the fundamental moments that have marked its development starting from the Modern Age. The course aims to give students the essential tools to memorize fashion's leading cultural and social structures: the key moments, consumers, producers, and the most relevant models. Students are encouraged to learn and verify the teacher's theoretical assertions (the images will be uploaded to the e-learning site); furthermore, students are invited to set the coordinates of a particular period, a specific style, a certain model, so that in the future they can develop their skills in analyzing and formulating personal judgments.
1. The birth of fashion and its development in the Renaissance and the 17th century.
2. The hegemony of French fashion from the 18th to the 20th century.
3. The birth of Italian fashion in the twentieth century.
4. Recent trends in international fashion.
