Learning outcomes

An introduction to theoretical and methodological instruments offered by performing arts, through the analysis of specific issues of the history of theatre.

Program

Prerequisites: None

Syllabus: Some exemplary performances, created for the Comédie-Française during the Romantic era and connoted by a directorial conception, give us a chance to reflect on the beginnings of stage-direction in France. At the same period the Italian theatrical system binds stage production to the lines of business system; a procedure which will not change since the beginning of the twentieth century. By comparing different typologies of texts, the differences between these staging ideas will be explained.
Lectures and analysis of primary and secondary sources such as archival fonts, iconography, performance recordings, films, videos, audio recordings, etc.
