Learning outcomes

The course has the aim to introduce the main themes regarding the “reading crisis” and the reading education in contemporary society (particular focus will be placed on children and adolescents). The course also promotes media literacy by developing students' skills in analysis and critical thinking about literature and the mass media.

Program

The “reading crisis” and the reading education in contemporary society (focusing on the contemporary Italian society). New kinds of illiteracy. The new book industry, the new reader and the new reading processes. Understanding and analysis of the different kind of texts. Understanding and analysis of mass media as a prerequisite to critical thinking in a democratic society.

The course will be share in two parts:

a)How to read and promote children’s reading Educative purposes and aims. Motivations to reading and reading pleasure. Reading aloud: theoretical aspects and applications. Reading promotions: theoretical aspects; practical applications and extracurricular activities; contemporary problems and dynamics in Italy. The reader as critical recipients of the book.


b)How to read and understand books and mass media. How to read an assay. Emotional supremacy in the mass media. The unuseful informations. How to read and understand different kind of mass media. Audiovisual narrative media for children and adolescents: short analysis and some guidelines.

Examination Methods

Program will be provided during the course.

Exam methods:
The exam consists of two-hours’ written text based on argumentative and reflexive open-questions.
