Learning outcomes
The recent worldwide economic crisis has shown the importance of the monetary and financial systems for the good working of economies.
The aim of the course is to study the characteristics, the structure and the working of monetary and financial markets and institutions in order to better understand the economic phenomena occurring today in the world economy.
The first part of the course focuses on monetary policy, with a special emphasis on how Central Banks cope with the problems generated by the Great Recession.
The second part of the course focuses on the microeconomics of banks in order to study their role in the current crisis and the possible regulatory responses.

1) Introductory macroeconomic topics: money and monetary markets; the IS-LM model, unemployment-inflation trade-off
2) Analysis of European Monetary Union and European Central Bank
3) Monetary policy with the IS-PC-MR models
4) Crises and unconventional monetary policies
5) Microeconomics of financial intermediaries

Examination Methods
Students must pass a written examination answering to three questions 90 minutes.
