Learning outcomes

The course is focused on biological and biotechnological innovations and it is organized in three modules. The first module consists of the study of the evolution of living eukaryotes to appreciate the convergence of biological and biotechnological innovations as written in the unpublished text written for this purpose. The second module consists of the critical reading of 50-60 original reviews and articles that are part of the bibliography of the text. The third module has the task to formulate a patent based on the theorical discussions of module I and II and conseguently must represent a physical embodiment of the combinatorial strategy underlining the evolution of living organisms. The elaborate, written and articulated under supervision and tutoring, is part of the examination that also includes the presentation and discussion of a scientific article related to the topics of the course.

Program

The lectures will address the following topics. The origin of eukaryotes and biological innovations. The RNA world. RNAinterference. The vision of the gene in the Era of molecular genetics. Transposable elements and genome evolution. On the origin of proteins. The driving forces of evolution. Gene and genome duplications; sufunctionalization, neofunctionalization, pseudogenization. Post-translational modifications of biological information. Biological and biotechnological innovations auxin-based. Biotechnological innovations will be show in connection to biological innovations
A second part will analyse 50-60 reviews and original articles which are part of the bibliography of the text used in the lectures (unpublished and written by the teacher).
The last part, laboratory, will first analyse two patents based on combinatorial genetics and then an idea and inventive steps will be discussed together with the “virtual” physical embodiments needed for filing a patent application.

Examination Methods

. The elaborate, written and articulated under supervision and tutoring, is part of the examination that also includes the presentation and discussion of a scientific article related to the topics of the course.
