Learning objectives

The course is aimed at illustrating the development and diversification of the English language in its varieties. It is also aimed at shedding light on the factors that have determined the emergence of Englishes in their plurality and at providing insights into linguistic, cultural and ideological issues related to the diverse contexts and uses of Englishes and English as a Lingua Franca (ELF) in the world. The latter will also be analyzed in its use in professional contexts. Language competence in English to be acquired: C2 level - Common European Framework of Reference for languages.

Program

During the course, aspects relating to the historical evolution of the English language will be dealt with and discussed with particular attention to its diffusion and its role as a global language also within the professional context and geographical diversification. Particular emphasis will be placed on phenomena of linguistic and cultural contact, and on the processes of linguistic change in the different contexts of use of the English language. In line with what has been defined for the teaching of Varieties of English (A-L), the course will deal with the following topics:
-Key concepts in the study of varieties of English Models for understanding the diffusion of the English language in the world
-Linguistic contact phenomena : linguistic hybridism in World Englishes, English-based pidgin and creole varieties
-English in different areas of the world -English as a global language: English as a Lingua Franca and English as Business Lingua Franca
-Implications of the pluralism of Varieties of the English language for learning and teaching the language.

Didactic methods

In line with what has been defined for the teaching of Varieties of English (A-L), to guarantee didactic continuity, the course will be divided into frontal lessons also carried out with the aid of digital tools. During the lessons, active participation and critical discussion of the topics covered will be encouraged. Non-attending students will be invited to access the Moodle platform for all content and activities. Method of teaching support:
The supplementary and support teaching materials will be uploaded to the teaching Moodle platform. Support will be guaranteed to students via email and during office hours.

Learning assessment procedures

Type of exam =Oral exam in English. The questions will focus on the theoretical topics and examples of varieties of English covered during the course.

Students with disabilities or specific learning disorders (SLD), who intend to request the adaptation of the exam, must follow the instructions given HERE

Evaluation criteria

The final grade is expressed in 30/30 and is equivalent to the average of the linguistic certification grade (C2) and the grade of the oral exam with the course teachers. Students will be expected to demonstrate metalinguistic awareness, analytical skills and critical thinking.
