Learning outcomes
In the past 20 years, technological developments in both hardware and software of imaging equipment have been extraordinary. At present, many physicians want to become experienced with this imaging technique because they have understood its impact in daily practice. These techniques now allow detailed imaging of the structure and function of the soft tissues and bones and are now routinely applied in the diagnosis and treatment of rheumatic diseases, as well as in the investigation of their pathogenesis. In particular over the last few years, technological advances have resulted in dramatic improvements in quality and resolution of ultrasonography (US), allowing it to become a very powerful tool in rheumatological clinical practice: there is now growing evidence that US improves clinical diagnosis and intervention skills. At present, a novel method of acquiring the lateral images of the spine is available, using dual-energy Dual-energy X-ray Absorptiometry (DXA) technology to allow vertebral fracture assessment (VFA).Today nailfold videocapillaroscopy represents the best method to analyse micro/cardiovascular abnormalities in rheumatic diseases. This course discusses the most important issues connected with the practice of these imaging techniques in rheumatology, including basic requirements, scanning technique, clinical applications, training and future developments.
