Learning objectives

The course aims to provide knowledge and insights about the main techniques of descriptive and inferential statistics, epidemiological studies, and related measures of frequency and association of diseases to appraise scientific articles critically. Furthermore, the course aims to provide theoretical and practical knowledge on social research methods, with an in-depth analysis of the questionnaire tool, the use of information systems and databases. STATISTICS FOR EXPERIMENTAL RESEARCH At the end of the course, the student must: (1) Measure the disease prevalence and incidence; (2) Evaluate the impact of risk factors on health, calculate the attributable risk and the relative risk ratio; (3) Compare the mortality rate in populations with different ages and gender through direct and indirect standardization; (4) Identify the link between cause and effect from an epidemiological perspective; (5) Describe the characteristics, indications, advantages, and disadvantages of the main types of epidemiological studies (transversal, cohort, case-control); (6) Critically appraise epidemiological articles. METHODOLOGY OF SOCIAL RESEARCH At the end of the course, the student must know social research methods concerning questionnaires and the theoretical and practical information to implement and administer a questionnaire in the health sector. MEDICAL STATISTICS AND EPIDEMIOLOGY At the end of the course, the student must know the most common statistical methods used in the scientific literature to analyze and interpret descriptive and inferential statistics. COMPUTERIZED DATA MANAGEMENT SYSTEMS IN ORGANIZATIONS At the end of the course, the student must know (1) the methodology for developing information systems in the organization environment and carrying out database design; (2) how to implement a database by a computerized data management system.
