Learning outcomes
The aim of the course is to introduce students to some themes and research methods of contemporary sociolinguistics, from theoretical perspectives to the applied dimension of field research.
Program
The module aims to provide a brief overview of sociolinguistics as a field of study of the variation observable in world languages in relation to different communities of speakers.
After providing some notions on the history of the discipline, the following will be discussed in particular:
- key-concepts of sociolinguistics, such as communicative competence, language community, language repertoire, variation, language contact
- methods for field research
- the axes of variation (Berruto) in the analysis of Italian

Examination Methods
The final examination consists of a written report based on an article chosen from a series of proposed articles.
The final report requires: A) a full summary of the content of the article (e.g. aim of the study, data, discussion, conclusions) and B) an articulate discussion (general or focused on one or more specific topics, identified e.g. at the level of linguistic analysis) on which are the positive effects on your profession resulting from the perspective described by the study in question, combined with the knowledge learnt during this module.
In particular, the following will be assessed
- the correctness of the summary and its degree of depth
- the correctness and relevance of the observations with reference to the professional and study context
- the ability to recognize and apply some of the key concepts of linguistics
- the use of terminology specific to the discipline.
The grade is expressed in thirtieths, calculated by awarding a maximum of 15 points to each of the two parts (A and B) composing the test.
