Learning outcomes
The teaching purpose is to discuss the clinical settings tipically observed in the context of emergency surgery. Main syndromes in emergency surgery setting will be considered and analyzed with a surgical and nursing approach. Diseases observed in emergency surgery will be reported considering the symptoms, diagnosis, treatment, indications to surgical treatment and type of surgery.

1. Shock syndrome (hypovolemic shock, SIRS, sepsis, septic shock)
Acute pancreatitis
Burns
2. Acute abdomen and peritonitis
Appendicites, cholecystitis, diverticulitis, bowel perforation, bowel ischemia
3. Bowel obstruction
Upper and lower bowel obstruction
Adhesions, volvolus, abdominal wall hernias, inflammatory bowel diseases (crohn and ulcerative colitis), colo-rectal tumors
4. Gastrointestinal bleeding
Upper and lower gastrointestinal bleeding
Mallory-Weiss, peptic ulcer, portal hypertension and esophageal varices, gastric tumors (adenocarcinoma e GIST), diverticular bleeding, other causes of colonic bleeding
5. Jaundice
Metabolic and infective complications of jaundice
Gallbladder and biliary tract lithiasis, chronic pancreatitis, pancreatic cancer, liver and biliary tract cancer
5. Trauma
Abdominal and thoracic trauma
Principles of damage control surgery
Trauma of hollow and parenchymatous organs
Thoracic wall, pulmonary and major vessels trauma. Pleural effusion, hemothorax and pneumothorax
6. Emergencies in vascular surgery
Deep vein thrombosis
Acute lower limb ischemia

Examination Methods
Ten multiple choice questions plus oral exam if sufficient results are obtained in at least 5 modules
