Program

General principles of communication: Introduction: - Centred/biopsychosocial paradigm. Reflection and comparison on the disease-centered model and the patient-centered model. - Reflection on learning to communicate: communication skills are not innate - Description of the complexity of the communication process: the axioms of human communication by P. Watzlawick and non-verbal communication and the analogical code. The principles of the helping relationship: - In-depth study of the concept of the helping relationship according to Carl Rogers. - Description of the characteristics of the helping relationship: recognizing emotions - congruence, empathy and unconditional positive acceptance. Styles and techniques that facilitate the interview - In-depth study of the modalities of the function of the relationship gathering information: listening, silence, continuation techniques, closed and open questions, echo technique. - Deepening the modalities of the function of the relationship check one's understanding: paraphrase, reformulation, reflection of feeling. Styles and attitudes that do not facilitate communication: - Describe the barriers to communication. Description of some of the person's reactions to the disease, understanding the reasons that cause these reactions. Exposition of nursing interventions - possible options, to respond to the patient. Starting and maintaining a helping relationship - gaining the patient's trust - knowing the patient's agenda Communication in assisting people with sensory deficits: - strategies to improve the quality of communication with deaf and blind people.

Didactic methods

Reflection and comparison on the disease-centered model and the patient-centered model with the use of film frames and literary passages. Observation of non-verbal language using film frames. Observation using a film frame of the barriers to listening and reflection on the value of listening through a literary passage. Observation of an anamnestic interview using frame films. Exercise using a case on recognizing the various communication techniques. Exercise using a case and observing a film frame on identifying the main communication barriers. Empathy exercise using a film frame. Exposition of nursing interventions - possible options, to respond to the patient. Exercise using microsituations on effective responses to reactions to the disease. Exercise through observation of role playing of non-verbal and verbal communication (communication techniques), communication barriers.

Learning assessment procedures

Written exam with open questions, use of microsituations and multiple questions

each question has a score: multiple chioce represents 7 points open questions have their own score which when added together reaches the grade (30)
