Program
Introduction to the Infectious Diseases class: course objectives, suggested textbook, examinations details.
Introduction to infectious diseases (current "hot topics", peculiar characteristics of infections, global issues). SARS-CoV2 infection (epidemiology, pathogenesis, clinical presentation, diagnosis, treatment and management). Antibiotics: principles of prescription and appropriate use; antibiotic stewardship. Antibiotic resistance and the role of healthcare workers.
HIV/AIDS and viral hepatitis (in 2022 and in pregnancy). Post-exposure prophylaxis to biological agents and risk of infection in healthcare workers. Infections and their prevention during pregnancy and newborn infections. Human Papilloma Virus (HPV). Immunisations during pregnancy. General aspects of infectious meningitis (bacterial and viral) and tuberculosis.
Urinary tract infections (UTI) in hospitalised patients and in pregnancy. Definition and general aspects of nosocomial infections.

Evaluation criteria
Knowledge of the main characteristics of infectious diseases at local and global level. Definition and applications of antimicrobial stewardship. Knowledge of the principles regarding the prevention and management of the infections in pregnancy. Ability to report the main aspects of infectious diseases and taught topics in terms of epidemiology, pathogenesis, clinical presentation, diagnosis, and management.
