Learning outcomes

• Acquire basic theoretical notions that underline the modality of the provision of technological assistive devices
• Gain an understanding of the steps necessary in the provision of technology assistive devices
• Gain an understanding of the principle categories of assistive devices
• Understand when the environment, assistive aid, and assistance, are facilitators or barriers to a person’s autonomy

Program

Technology assistive devices can be considered an essential part of the individualized assistive project for patients with varies types of permanent or progressive disabilities. They can efficiently contribute to the patient’s autonomy and/or reduce the level of caregiver assistance.
The evaluation of the patient’s needs resolvable with assistive technology, the creation of an project of autonomy, the proposal of environmental adaptations, the prescription process – provision, training of use – verification of short term and long term efficacy of the assistive device, are activities that require knowledge and specific competencies.
An assistive device proposed in a quick manner, not personalized, not accompanied by adequate training and not supported by a strong consulting service and/or maintenance can indeed create problems instead of solve them (medical, ergonomic, relational, or environmental problems)
This teaching module proposes to elaborate the sopraesopsti in the various life domains of the user to allow the students to project and carry out the most efficient and effective technological solutions to respond to the health needs of users and their caregivers.
The first part of the teaching module will be an introduction:
The role of the adaptive aid in the improvement of the quality of life of a person
The moment of design: the assessment process for adaptive aids
The moment of decision: prescription and authorization
The “nomenclature” of prosthetics and the rules regarding renews and substitutions
The moment of “attuativo”: delivery, test and training
The moment of verification: follow up

The second part proposes to present the basic characteristics of the principle categories of adaptive aids.

Assistive technology for mobility (adaptive aids for walking, manual wheelchairs, tilt n’space wheelchairs, electric wheelchairs, skin protection cushions for wheelchairs)
Assistive technology for the transferring of patients (lifts, stairlifts, “smaller” aids for transfers)
Assistive technology for hygiene and eating (adaptive aids for the bathroom, assistive technology for hygiene, adaptive aids and environmental adaptations for drinking and eating and for meal preparation)
Operational reflections regarding environmental characteristics and any adaptation
