Learning outcomes

This class provides theoretical foundations and fundamental concepts for the knowledge of phonetics and phonology.
Knowledge:
- Anatomical and physiological notions of the phono-articulatory apparatus that allow the production of voice
- basic concepts of phonetics and phonology
- “IPA” International Phonetic Alphabet
- linguistic competence in formal and functional aspects
- stages of the typical evolution of language
- prelinguistic indexes of phonological and lexical development
- Specific language impairment (or Developmental Language Disorder)

Skills:
- ability to perform a phonetic transcription of words and phrases
- recognition, evaluation, differential diagnosis and intervention in developmental phonological disorders
- know how to choose methods and tools for developmental language disorders
- be able to inform and propose prevention interventions of language disorders

This class will cover the following topics:
- Overview of anatomy and physiology of the phono-articulatory apparatus
- Elements of phonetics and phonology
- IPA International Phonetic Alphabet and principles of phonetic transcription
- Linguistic competence: formal and functional aspects
- Stages of the typical evolution of language
- The language disorder (DL)

Teaching methods
Frontal lessons with slides (cf. repository in Moodle), practical exercises on phonetic transcriptions, recognition of phonological processes, discussion / group work.

Examination Methods

*** ATTENTION: Due to the Coronavirus pandemic, and in accordance with the University of Verona guidelines, during ​the 2020 summer session the assessment modality will be modified as follows: ONLINE ORAL EXAMINATION (preferably via Zoom). However, the student is asked to keep pen and paper handy. ***

The exam has the aim of verifying the theoretical competence acquired by the students and their ability to apply it to the description of classes of phonetic and phonological data.

The exam is a written test, consisting of 6 questions (multiple choice and open-ended). Depending on the number of open-ended questions, the duration of the exam can vary, ranging between 30 and 45 minutes. The questions will be about all the topics in the program, discussed during class and autonomously studied by the students on the available materials.

The evaluation criteria are the following:
- correctness and exhaustivity of the responses;
- adequate analytical ability;
- argumentation efficacy and clarity.
