Learning outcomes
The course objectives are to provide the student with the tools to understand:
1) what is research in the social-health field;
2) what types of research can be done in psychiatry;
3) what is epidemiological research;
4) what type of research is interesting for the psychiatric rehabilitation therapist;
5) what tools are needed to find the scientific information useful for professional education;
6) how the quality of research and scientific studies is assessed;
At the end of the course, the student will have experienced, through small group work, to plan and to realise an epidemiological study.
Program
1) History of psychiatry and psychiatric research;
2) Principles of psychiatric epidemiology (including planning of an epidemiological study);
3) Health Information Systems and Psychiatric Registers of Cases;
4) Use of health information systems for research;
5) Critical review of some epidemiological studies in the psychiatric field (including the critical reading of scientific articles chosen by the students themselves);
6) The methods and theory of the search for scientific information;
7) The use of search engines in general and the MEDLINE system for searching the medical literature.

Written exam with open and closed questions on a scientific article chosen by the candidate
