Learning outcomes

The student should know the structural and biological properties of pathological bacteria, fungi, protozoa and viruses and the related mechanism of pathogenesis. Moreover, the student should know the microorganisms involved in cardiopulmonary diseases and the methods of infection diagnosis.

Program

Introduction to Medical Microbiology. General information on infectious diseases. Prophylaxis of infection by microbial agents. Structure of bacteria. Bacterial Pathogenesis. General information on Protozoa, Fungi and Helminths. Structure and replication of viruses. Antimicrobial therapy. Diagnosis of infection. Respiratory infections. Infections of the cardiovascular system. Sepsis and nosocomial infections. Opportunistic Infection and Transplantation. Clinical Microbiology: Bacteria (Staphylococci, Streptococci, Mycobacteria, Corynebacterium dyphteriae, Bordetella, Haemophilus influenzae, Legionella, Enterobacteriaceae, Pseudomonas, Chlamydiae, Mycoplasma, Protozoa (Trypanosoma cruzi), Fungi (Candida spp, Cryptococcus neoformans, Aspergillus spp.) and Viruses (Orthomyxoviridae, Paramyxoviridae, Coronaviridae, Picornaviridae, Herpesviridae, Adenoviridae, Parvoviridae, Papovaviridae HIV, HBV, HCV, HDV).
