Learning outcomes
The Teaching aims at providing knowledge on the main methodological approaches and the main techniques suitable to investigate the psychological functions related to motor and sports performance. In particular, the student will acquire knowledge on the interaction between cognitive functions and motor and sports performance in order to devise new experimental paradigms according to a twofold direction: on the one hand to realize paradigms that allow to understand whether and how high level of sport practice leads to the development of special cognitive skills and on the other hand to develop new ways to enhance some cognitive functions in order to improve sports performance. The elements will also be provided to acquire a methodological approach useful to conduct a scientific research. Particular emphasis will be given to techniques that allow to investigate the functioning of the brain during the execution of cognitive-motor tasks, such as EEG, TMS and fMRI.
Program
The course will cover the following topics:
1. Behavioral research methods: Reaction times and psychophysics.
2 Methods of investigation of the motor system: Transcranic magnetic stimulation applied to sport.
3 Methods of brain imaging: Electroencephalography (EEG) and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) applied to sport.
4 Methodological approach: Experimental research designs, the concept of variable, elements of statistics.
5. Hands-on: the students will prepare and present a research project.
Teaching methods
Teaching consists of frontal lessons, for a total of 24 hours (3 CFUs). The first lesson will serve to guide students thought the course: information will be provided about the program, the lesson schedule, the reference textbooks, and the exams. In addition, for each topic discussed during the lessons, the reference will be provided to the chapters in which that topic is described. Additional materials will be provided on the e-learning platform of the University.
Throughout the academic year, a student reception service is available, with a weekly fixed schedule.
