Learning outcomes
The course aims at providing examples of the contribution that History of political doctrines can give to the critical comprehension of political problems of current affairs. At the end of the course, students will have to prove that they: - accurately know the subjects of the program, - are able to expose them in a consequential and concise way, - have acquired independent judgement.
Program
Course title:
On the colour line: Du Bois, Fanon, Davis, (Montanelli) and us
Course content (for both attending and non-attending students):
1. Firstly, by focusing on classical political philosophers of modernity (Thomas Hobbes, John Locke, Jean-Jacques Rousseau, Karl Marx) the course will investigate the main political doctrines that shaped politics in modern State (absolutism, liberalism, democracy, socialism).
2. Secondly - through William Edward Burghardt Du Bois, Frantz Fanon and Angela Davis - the course will analyse how the point of view of racialized subjects allows a radical critique of modern political thought, by the intersection of race, class and gender.
The debate on Indro Montanelli's monument in Milan will be taken into exam as an example of the removal of the colonial past in Italian public opinion. And the effect of this removal on the perception of immigration in Italy will be questioned.
Methods:
Lectures based on reading and interpretation of the texts and discussions.
Due to the Coronavirus pandemic, and in accordance with the University of Verona guidelines, classes might be held online.

Double degree
The University of Verona, through a network of agreements with foreign universities, offers international courses that enable students to gain a Double/Joint degree at the time of graduation. Indeed, students enrolled in a Double/Joint degree programme will be able to obtain both the degree of the University of Verona and the degree issued by the Partner University abroad - where they are expected to attend part of the programme -, in the time it normally takes to gain a common Master’s degree. The institutions concerned shall ensure that both degrees are recognised in the two countries.
Places on these programmes are limited, and admissions and any applicable grants are subject to applicants being selected in a specific Call for applications.
The latest Call for applications for Double/Joint Degrees at the University of Verona is available now!
