Learning outcomes

The course of Psychiatry aims to provide students with basic knowledge of psychopathology, with particular attention to the diseases that mostly engage the Mental Health Services. Part of the course is dedicated to the historical, social, legal and organization of health and social services that relate to the field of psychiatry. After completing the course, also built by the presentation and discussion of clinical cases, the student is able to know: a) the areas of intervention of Psychiatry; b) what mental disorders are and how they are classified; c) which are the possible causes of mental disorders; which therapeutic, rehabilitative and social interventions are more effective and d) how the Departments of Mental Health are organised and how they work.

1. History of Psychiatry and evolution of psychiatric care
2. Psychiatric disorders:
• Schizophrenia and schizophrenia-like states
• Affective disorders
• Neurotic and somatoform disorders
• Personality Disorders
• Organic brain syndromes and mental disorders in elderly
3. The causes and the social determinants of mental illness
4. The economic evaluations in mental health
5. The prevention of psychiatric disorders and the promotion of mental health
6. The evaluation of therapeutic and rehabilitative activities and the rehabilitative and residential facilities
7. The Department of Mental Health and the legal and legislative aspects of particular relevance in psychiatry (TSO, OPG, TEC, etc.)

Examination Methods

The exam is in written form, consists of 30 closed questions (multiple choice) and two open questions. The time allotted for completion is 60 minutes, the evaluation will follow the following criteria:
- 1 point for each correct answer (multiple choice);
- Minus 1 point for each wrong answer (multiple choice);
- 0 (zero) points for each multiple choice question not completed;
- For open questions, from 0 (zero) to 3 points for each based on the accuracy and completeness of the response.
