Learning objectives
1. provide the latest updates on knowledge on bone metabolism and the pathophysiology of the main metabolic bone diseases; 2. to know how to carry out a correct differential diagnosis of the main metabolic bone diseases; 3. to be able to identify and use bone turnover biomarkers useful for diagnosis, therapeutic choice and follow up and to be able to manage the main investigations for the quantitative and qualitative assessment of bone 4. to provide ideas and tools for research in this field.
Prerequisites and basic notions
Osteoporosis is a metabolic disease of the skeleton that manifests itself with an increased risk of fracture. It generally manifests itself with advancing age but secondary forms that can also affect young people are not infrequent. It is not an exclusive problem of the female sex as it can also occur in males, where, precisely because it is less expected, it is usually diagnosed very late. It can be associated with various diseases and is favored by the use of many drugs, including corticosteroids and those more recently used for adjuvant hormonal blocking. But osteoporosis is not the only metabolic bone disease and must be distinguished from other systemic or focal skeletal pathologies such as, for example, osteomalacia, osteogenesis imperfecta, hypophosphatasemia, algodystrophy, bone edema, by Paget, etc.
Program
UPDATE ON THE PATHOGENESIS OF METABOLIC BONE DISEASES UPDATE ON STUDY AND DIAGNOSIS TECHNIQUES OF METABOLIC BONE DISEASES DIFFERENTIAL DIAGNOSTICS OF METABOLIC BONE DISEASES (Primary and secondary osteoporosis, Osteomalacia, Paget's disease, Hypophosphatasia, Osteogenesis Imperfecta, Algo dystrophy, etc) UPDATE ON THE PHARMACOLOGICAL APPROACHES OF METABOLIC BONE DISEASES AND ON THE DIAGNOSTIC-THERAPEUTIC GUIDELINES RESEARCH AGENDA IN THE FIELD OF METABOLIC BONE DISEASES
Bibliography
Didactic methods
Alongside the classic frontal reports there will be some interactive ones dedicated to specific and practical management problems (management of bone assessment tools, databases and computerized medical records, fracture risk assessment algorithms, monitoring tests, various therapeutic strategies, etc. .). The course also includes a practical part with radiology quizzes, discussion of clinical and complex cases and critical analysis of the literature.
