Learning outcomes

The course aims at providing examples of the contribution that Political Philosophy may give to a critical comprehension of political problems of actuality, analyzing how contemporary queer theories challenge usual ways of thinking gender identities.

Content of course: Sidelong glances on the world: new interpretations of the human in contemporary philosophies

Syllabus: Firstly the course will discuss the status of Political Philosophy as an academic discipline as well as its relationship with “reality”. Secondly, by the examples of Michel Foucault and Judith Butler, we will investigate how contemporary queer theories question the binary representation of gender in medicine, psychology and juridical regulation, revealing a social disciplining of identity that causes exclusions, discriminations and violations of human rights.
