Program
Title: Angelus Novus. Experience and poverty of the XX. Century in Walter Benjamin
Contents: During the course the concept of experience, both as day by day and as artistic experience, will be analyzed as well as its poverty due to the evolution of modernity, which has produced a progressive loss of the capacity of the body, and thus of the senses, to represent a medium of experience. This is the context within which we will examine concepts like voluntary memory and growth of reflexivity in day by day experience, and spiritualization, allegory, parody and irony in the artistic one. The course will conclude by analyzing Picasso’s Guernica, which as a painting is representative for the topics treated, but also constitutes a testimony of the same period in which Benjamin is working.
Didactical Methods: The is structured prevalently by frontal lessons and lectures from the texts; the major themes will be items for a discussion.
Examination Methods
The exam consist in an oral discussion with the teacher.
